Green Gates’ 6 Principles of Effective Teaching and Learning
Below are how each of the principles are applied in all classrooms across school.
Climate for What this looks like in our classrooms:
Learning
Consistent Clear, consistent timetables are in place across school and these are maintained
Routines across year groups.
There is an agreed signal for attention and this is used consistently in all classes -
a raised hand or a clapping signal.
Teachers greet pupils as they arrive into the classroom throughout the day.
Transitions from carpet - chairs is done using the 1,2,3 technique.
Pupils line up in alphabetical order at all times.
Positive Adults greet pupils by their name.
Relationships
Restorative conversations are used after incidents with the emphasis on restoration
and next steps (script outlined in behaviour policy).
Planned paired talk with sentence stems is focused and respectful.
Adults model respectful behaviour and consistently apply the behaviour policy,
calmly and without raised voices.
High Teachers create a climate of high expectations, high challenge and high trust.
Expectations
Pupils are all expected to achieve the same end point and scaffolding is used to
support this where needed.
Consistent teaching of presentation and transcription standards (see presentation
policy).
Calm, orderly Resources are labelled so pupils can access materials independently.
environment
Minimal and purposeful displays / working walls.
Softer lighting where possible (lamps), and natural light where possible to reduce
overstimulation.
Quiet, on-task behaviours.
Consistent use of the behaviour policy.
Expectations for voice levels are taught and signalled.
Routines are taught and rehearsed regularly.
So that… Every child feels safe and secure and ready to learn.
