Green Gates’ 6 Principles of Effective Teaching and Learning
Making What this looks like in our classrooms:
Connections
Prior Knowledge Clear, sequenced planning is in place for all subjects and prior knowledge is outlined
on medium term plans.
All units begin with a recap of prior learning which is evidenced in books.
The ‘rule of 3’ is applied where pupils revisit key knowledge at least 3 times whilst
in school so that learning sticks.
Regular, low- Within all subjects, retrieval activities are planned regularly to help support the
stakes testing transfer of key knowledge into the long term memory.
We aim to vary reviewing materials activities to maintain interest and engagement
but to also ensure that learners can recall and access previously learnt content in a
range of contexts. We predominantly use the following strategies: …….
At the end of each unit, a knowledge check is carried out to see what has been
retained.
Curriculum We aim to build pupils’ schema by activating prior knowledge and explicitly
Coherence identifying the link between new and prior knowledge.
Our curriculum in all subjects is carefully sequenced, ensuring that knowledge and
skills build progressively over time.
Deliberate Across all subjects, teachers carefully identify the key vocabulary that pupils are
Vocabulary expected to know, understand and retain. This vocabulary is explicitly taught through
Instruction direct instruction, enabling all pupils to access and engage with their learning
effectively.
Knowledge organisers clearly set out the essential Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary that
all pupils are expected to acquire and use confidently.
So that… Pupils make purposeful connections between new and existing knowledge.
